overview

Parents know they sometimes need a hand to send their teenage athletes back to school in style. Working with Sports Authority, Speedshape built a novel interface for perusing shoe reviews from many popular brands. These review videos are narrated by two teenagers, Cole E. and Sarah K. K., and even come across as excerpts from a web chat, a subtle tip of the hat to this popular venue for teenage social life.

Supported on all major browsers, the Shoe Review application opens by asking the viewer to select young mens’ shoe reviews or young womens’, according to the narrator. The main screen features an HTML5 animated shoe carousel, where the items can be dragged and dropped into the video area for playback. This novel animated treatment for summoning streaming reviews comes across smoothly with the easing and motion treatment usually reserved for Flash animations.

CHOOSE A NARRATOR

Parents visiting the site will have their specific teen in mind. By self-selecting into male or female shoe reviews we load only the content relevant to their search.

DRAG AND DROP

Dropping a draggable shoe from the carousel onto the video hotspot causes the video player to appear and expand. The content on the page shifts down while the video plays and shifts back up when the finished video is replaced by the original hotspot. The novel user interaction makes this site a little catchier and more memorable.

VIDEO REVIEWS

Each review is less than 30 seconds, capturing the highlights of the shoe from the teenage reviewer’s vantage point. Style points, comfort factor, performance on the field, and more features are expressed in the nonchalant cadence of a relaxed teen.

Coinciding with this January’s NAMM show, Drum Workshop and Speedshape launched a first of its kind web app that allows drum enthusiasts to build their own custom kits — KitBuilder 2.0.

Supported on various browsers and mobile devices including iPhone and iPad, Kitbuilder 2.0 allows for users to visualize a myriad of beautiful drum and hardware finishes using three archetype sets, or customize a photographic overhead kit schematic using templates of some of the world’s most popular drummers such as Tommy Lee, Dave Grohl, Neil Peart, Sheila E. or Steve Perkins. Thousands of images and models offer limitless possibilities of drums, hardware, pedals, accessories, finishes, assorted patterns, finishes and color combinations.

Based on DW’s patented SSC technology, users can sample and compare different sound variations, download images of their personalized drum kits for wallpaper, easily share with friends via Facebook, Twitter and TinyURL, generate a quote and then pick-up their new set from a list of DW Drum dealers. All mobile-friendly HTML5 compliant.

STARTING OUT

Users begin by selecting a base set and kit, including the finish and specific make of the drum set that interests them. Later in the customizer the user can rearrange individual elements, add or remove pieces, and test out their sound.

TUNING THE LAYOUT

Putting a drummer right in his comfort zone, the top down view lets visitors position their cymbals, drums, and stool just as if they were picturing the gear in their own studio. The robust controls and intuitive drag-and-drop interface makes this immersive application immediately appealing.

FINISHING DETAILS

Apart from choosing the pieces and position of the set, users can tune even the fine details of wood finish and chrome. The price-impacting data is captured and ready to pipe to a back-end service for quoting and final purchase.

The highly detailed experience of the application speaks to the quality and care DW drums puts into their product. It takes an app this smooth and detailed to show customers the quality they can expect from their new drums.
